Global Context
Around the world young people who lack caring adult guidance are at risk of becoming delinquents. According to the UN World Youth report in 2005, “Young people who live in difficult circumstances are often at risk of delinquency. Poverty, family dysfunction, substance abuse and the death of family members are proven risk factors for becoming delinquent. Insecurity deriving from an unstable social environment increases vulnerability, and young people with poorly developed social skills are less able to protect themselves against the negative influences of a peer group.” (World Youth Report 2005 Young people today, and in 2015, 2005). A recent study taking place in the city of Chicago shows that youth guidance programs such as Becoming a Man “reduces weapon crimes and vandalism by 36%, reduce violent crime arrests by 44%, and reduces the likelihood of attending school in a juvenile justice setting.” (Youth Guidance, 2012). Programs that prevent violence and prevent minors of ending up in a jail setting help our communities economically and socially no matter where in the world. Globally we do have minors in poverty, who have been neglected, with parents that may be mentally ill, but as a globe we are all at a different stance due to the differences we face trough our cultures.
