Applied Psychology
Psychology is the attempt to understand human behavior, development and interactions in general, psychology can help create healthier environment to help positive development or rehabilitation in some cases. Three concept are social psychology, development and disorders.
Cognitive theory says, Young people are more likely to imitate, people in their reference groups and family. Bandura's studies show that children who are expose to violence are more likely to be aggressive. Aggressiveness may be removed by negative punishment, and prevention using positive reinforcement when the child avoids conflict, not when they are violent.
According to developmental psychologist, Piaget and his theory of cognitive development formal operational stage is reached after the age of 11 where humans can think logically. Piaget's theory is widely accepted, but recent studies have shown deviation. According to psychologist Elizabeth Cauffman of the University of California-Irvine in a USA Today interview 'it's a dubious practice. Her studies show that adolescents tend to move away from this psychopath profile when they're tracked for a couple of years, while adult scores are usually stable.' (Marilyn Elias, 2006). This data proves that minors are not usually completely developed and should not be incarcerated but rehabilitated, since they are usually not completely mentally developed.
Children with psychological problems are also at stake for being tried as adult. “66% of youth processed in adult criminal court had at least one psychiatric disorder and 43% had two or more types of disorders.” (UCLA School of Law, 2010). Prevention for crimes committed by people with mental disorders is possible, accessibility to mental health facilities in the city of Chicago for instance is scarce and usually to far away from the client. Clients should be able to have a mental heath center at walking distance from their home, many of them loose their driver's license when diagnosed.
The field of psychology can be used to reduce the amount of instability in people's life by helping treat disorders, illness, or dilemmas. With the use of research in the field we may be able to help people understand each other and themselves better by creating an atmosphere where counseling and professional psychiatry should be available to all clients, to reduce violent crimes, to reduce children in prisons and to reduce the mentally ill that are sometimes sexually exploited or left on their own luck in living on a street. I have learned that people need psychological help, not only to treat disorders, but in order to reduce stress and manage yourself, to feel good. Just by going to a psychiatrist you are not crazy you may just want counseling, it is a very healthy way to improve yourself.
